Betty Del McGee Smith, 83, was called to heaven on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Betty was undoubtedly the epitome of a true “Austinite”. She was born at Brackenridge Hospital on October 13, 1930, to Lou and Boyd McGee. She lived in Austin her entire life and graduated from Austin High School. She went on to further her education at the University of Texas at Austin.
Betty had an undeniable passion for dance. In 1968, she opened her own dance studio where she had the opportunity to influence the lives of so many aspiring young dancers throughout the Austin area. Betty also taught synchronized swimming at Balcones Country Club in Austin. She worked for Southwestern Bell for over 20 years. In her spare time, Betty substitute taught in the Austin Independent School District up until just 5 years ago.
Betty’s first priority has always been her loving family, who she held so close to her heart. Her constant love, encouragement and support will be missed dearly by her family as well as all of the people who were fortunate enough to know her.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Lou and Boyd McGee. She is survived by her four sons, Barney Smith and wife CeCe, Terry Smith, Mack Smith and Rusty Smith; her grandchildren, Matt, Ryan, Hunter, Kylie, Mackenzie, Andrew and Jake; her sisters Doris Willimack and Pat Chambers, and her brother Buddy McGee, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
