Beverly Strittmatter Scarborough Yahiel, 65, died of ovarian cancer on November 2, 2014. She was born in Cincinnati, but her life took off when she moved to Austin in 1968 to finish a journalism degree at UT. It was a colorful era; she wrote for The Rag, an underground paper, worked on political campaigns, and moved with friends into the house on French Place where her daughter Megan and family live today. She was an aide to Councilmember Sally Shipman and did PR and development for United Way, Zach Scott, UT Law School Foundation and Ballet Austin. For the past 16 years she raised funds for mental health for the New Milestones Foundation, an affiliate of Austin Travis County Integral Care. A lifelong volunteer, she was president of Maplewood PTA and Women In Communications and on the boards of Congregation Beth Israel, Girl Scouts, Austin Peace Council and Austin Jewish Film Festival. She wrote lots of grants, put on countless events, and made well over 100 short videos with Ingrid Weigand. She was driven and funny and generous, had a multitude of loyal friends, and never quite learned to keep house. Grateful for many years of sobriety, she attended Bridging The Shore Women's Meeting.
Beverly is survived by a large and loving family: husband of 17 years, Dan Yahiel; son, Dr. David Glahn and Esther; daughters Megan and husband David Alvarez and Ada Scarborough; step-daughters Rebecca and Katherine Yahiel; extraordinary grandchildren Joshua, Natan and Asaf Glahn, Chela and Luka Alvarez-Scarborough; siblings Jennifer Troy and husband Mike, Pete Strittmatter and wife Kathy, Mike Strittmatter and wife Denise, Mary Bell and husband Wayne, and in-laws Ginette and William Yahiel and Tammy Yahiel and Roger Webb.
A memorial service is planned for 10:30 am Wednesday, Nov 5, Congregation Beth Israel, 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd. Contributions can be made to any of the organizations mentioned here or any other progressive cause.
Beverly thanks all those who showed up to help during her final chapter.
Zikhronah livrakha—may her memory be a blessing!
