B.K. Mayes graced her way into heaven at 11:55 pm on Friday, February 26th. She lovingly waited until her family was all around her before leaving this place. B.K. was born in Chillicothe, Texas to William Calvin and Willie Belle Freeman in 1927. She attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas where she met her life-long love, Gordon Mayes. Married just short of 57 years, B.K. and Gordon worked to build a life and family together during his years at UTMB in Galveston, during his internship, and residency in Kansas City, Missouri and returning to Lubbock to practice. B.K. was mother to not only her own children, but all of the friends of her children and the neighborhood children. Room mother, Camp Fire Girl group leader, whatever was needed, she was there. She was even visited often by the former girlfriends and boyfriends of her children who just wanted to see her. She never met a stranger and greeted everyone with such warmth and graciousness that you wanted to pour your heart out to her. To the very end of her life, she continued to want to know the people around her, wanting to know all about them, how they got where they were and their family life. She made friends at the grocery store, the airport, the vet's office and even the pharmacy. An acquaintance once said, "Your mom gives the best hugs!" She loved to cook and entertain and came alive around people. She was funny and silly and loved to tease with her children. Her home and heart were always open to those around her and she will be missed by the many who loved her. B.K. loved God, her husband, children, friends and animals without hesitation, and showed love, grace and warmth to every single person she met. B.K. is survived by her husband Gordon, daughter Lori and her husband Jim Hartman, son Mark, daughter Lisa, son Jon and his wife Missa, grandsons Sam and Sutton, and many adoring pets and grandpets. She also leaves behind loving members of her Home Team from the Lakeway Church, friends in Lubbock including the members of the MMTC and Second Baptist Church. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful doctors and nurses at Seton Hospital, and all of those who provided her additional opportunities to meet and love more people during her last days. Services will be held at The Lakeway Church, 2203 Lakeway Blvd., in Lakeway, Texas at 2p.m. on Thursday, March 4th, 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the B.K. and Gordon Mayes Presidential Endowment Scholarship at Texas Tech University, P.O. Box 41081, Lubbock, Texas 79409.
