Robert Drake Wilkes, Sr., age 77, of Austin passed away peacefully Wednesday morning with his family by his side. Born to Jack H. Wilkes and Mary J. Criner in Enid, Oklahoma, he spent his childhood in Fort Worth, graduating from Arlington Heights High School. He attended The University of Texas at Austin, playing both football and basketball for the Longhorns. He earned his Law Degree from Southern Methodist University in 1960. It was also while attending SMU law school that he met his future wife, Betty Lou Travis of Jacksonville, Texas.
After practicing law for about 20 years, he returned to the University of Texas to receive a teaching certificate and enter the world of coaching. He coached football in the Central Texas area at Pflugerville High School, Round Rock High School, and Hays Consolidated High School. After retiring from coaching and teaching, he reentered private law practice.
Coach Wilkes always put his family first and was wholly dedicated to them. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He never missed any of his children or grandchildren's athletic events (football, basketball, baseball, and yes, even soccer). He played golf since he was a teen, and taught the love of golf to his son.
Above his love for his family was his love for Christ which he demonstrated through his many years of teaching Sunday School, volunteering and giving. While a member of the United Methodist Church, he was ordained a deacon. After moving to Austin he faithfully attended and served at Hyde Park Baptist Church.
Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty; daughter Mary Wilkes; daughter Robin Coopwood and her husband Ben; son Robert "Bo" D. Wilkes Jr. and his wife Dana; daughter Betty Kay Wilkes; and seven grandchildren, Travis, Katie, Sara, Gigi, Drake, Elle and Duncan.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 9th at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Drive.
