

Cader A. Shelby was born January 13, 1922, in Greenville, Texas, and died Sunday, February 10, 2008. He is survived by daughters Louise Shelby and Katie Shelby Toth, and son-in-law Mike Toth. The family wishes to express their deepest thanks to all the staff at Barton Hills Assisted Living, and for the brief but blessed care from the staff at Odyssey Hospice. The people at Barton Hills made his last years and days some of the happiest of his life and Odyssey, particularly Terry, made his (and our family's) last days & moments comfortable and peaceful. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Saye Shelby. He was a very proud Marine, serving in WWII in the Pacific. He was a stretcher-bearer, participating in action at Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. He played the bass clarinet in the Dallas Symphony for 5 years, the San Antonio Symphony for 3 years and the Austin Symphony for a year and a half, while he went back to school in the 1950s. He got his Masters in Geology from the University of Texas and worked for the Texas Water Development Board until his retirement in 1984. He played in the John Roberts' dance band, among others, for many, many years and the John Roberts Dixieland Jazz Band at the Capitol Oyster Bar every Sunday night for 10 years. He taught clarinet to students of all ages for most of his adult life. He will be remembered as a cheerful, intelligent, sweet, funny, grateful father and friend who made knowing him and caring for him a gift. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00, Tuesday, February 12th with a short Memorial Service at 2:00 at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress Ave. Austin, Texas 78704.
