great grandmother’s house in Yoakum, Texas. She was named Carlon Louise after her
father, Carlton Johnson, and her mother, Bess Louise Johnson. When she was four,
the family moved to Austin where she attended Mathews Elementary School, was in
the first class at O’Henry Jr. High School, and finished at old Stephen F. Austin High
School. While in high school, she met the love of her life, John Patrick (Pat) Dyess Jr.,
and they were married on August 2, 1956. That began the happy journey they
took for 50 years enjoying each other and their four children. She loved her children
with all of her heart. She adored her grandchildren. Her joy was complete when her
great-grandchildren were born. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren
“hung the moon” in her eyes. While she always considered raising her family as her primary career,
she also worked at Brackenridge Hospital, then for Dr. Joe McIlhaney, and finally before she decided to
retire, she worked in the Administration Office of the Austin Independent School District
where she made many friends. Carlon loved being with her family whether it was in their home, going to Winstar to try
her luck at the slots, or taking cruises. Her family meant the world to her and she
showed her love unconditionally. She was never happier than when her family was around her.
While her husband was battling Parkinson’s, she was diagnosed with ovarian
cancer in December 2005. She was determined to battle it and with the help
of Dr. Bali Netaji’s excellent medical and oncology care and the loving support of her
extra-ordinary family, she managed to fight it for 8 years to the bitter-sweet end on
December 2, 2013. In addition, through that time, she greatly appreciated the warm care of Dr. Laura
Gilbey. Her final weeks were under the care of Hospice Austin where she had a favorite
nurse, Griselda. She found comfort in the Hospice chaplain’s visits (Rev. Pam Brouker).
The family would like to thank Dr. Netaji and his staff, Hospice of Austin and the
Christopher House for all the wonderful care you gave. Also, to all the caring family
and friends who supported her with visits, prayers, cards, flowers, food and sweets –
thank you! She was preceded in death by her parents in 1978 and her husband (Pat Dyess) on
September 16, 2006. She is survived by her children – Patti Kohl (Joe), Ricki, Chuck
(Gus), and Kerri (Jack) Dyess; her grandchildren – Jennifer Kohl Watkins (David), Kody
Kohl (Candice), Chad Kohl (Daniela), Clay Kohl, Brandon Dyess and Alaina Carlon
Dyess; her great-grandchildren – Aubrey, Adelyn, and Blake Watkins and Harper Kohl.
She is also survived by two special sisters – Joan Johnson Culver and Bethel Johnson
Taft (Ken), her aunt, Edna Ware, and many nieces and nephews and extended family.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening, on Wednesday, the 4th of December 2013 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
