
Carol Jean Christ, 58, of Austin, Texas, born March 19, 1948, in Belleville, Illinois, died at her home Tuesday, November 28, 2006, surrounded by her dear friends and cousin, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Ms. Christ was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Frances, nee Rieder, Christ; her twin sister, Cathy Christ; and a sister, Ruth Ann Christ, who passed away at birth. Surviving are her special cousin, Frances Athy of Coulterville, Illinois; her dear friends, Fred Newberry and Jeanne Kallina of Austin, Texas; one aunt, Loretta Christ of Mascoutah, Illinois; one uncle, Alvin Christ of Belleville, Illinois; many other cousins; and numerous friends. Carol graduated with a masters degree in Deaf Education from Gallaudet in Washington D. C. (a University established for deaf and hard of hearing students). Upon arrival in Austin, she taught high school students at the Texas School for the Deaf for seven years. She then worked at Travis County Services for the Deaf as a case worker for multi-handicapped adults, and was community outreach representative to various agencies who encounter deaf persons, including local police and fire departments. Next, she took coursework at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas (now Texas State University) and obtained State of Texas certification as an Educational Diagnostician. She returned to Texas School for the Deaf as a diagnostician, where she remained until her retirement in the year 2000. Memorial may be made to Jesus Lutheran Church for the Deaf, Austin, Texas or Hospice of Austin. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 30, with a Prayer Service to be held at 6:00 pm at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home with Reverend Mark Seeger, Pastor of Jesus Lutheran Church for the Deaf officiating.
