Charles Bruce Malone Jr. died in Austin, Texas on November 26, 2011 at the age of 92 after a long and productive life. Charles was born July 16, 1919 in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from the Montgomery Bell Academy in 1936 and attended the University of Tennessee. On June 28, 1941, he married Elizabeth Buck and they celebrated their 70th anniversary before her death in September 2011.
With the start of World War II, he started his career in the aircraft business with Consolidated Vultee in Nashville. After the War, he moved to Ft. Worth, Texas and General Dynamics. In 1953, he became the industrial engineer in charge of sheet metal details at Chance Vought Aircraft, later Ling Temco Vought. He retired after 43 years to own Malone's Cottage Garden with Elizabeth serving customers in Arlington for 20 years with home decorative plants. Charles and Elizabeth were passionate about raising and showing camellias across the South. Their blooms were frequent "head table" winners and they became respected judges. Charles and close friend Jack Greenberg of Dallas traveled the backroads of the deep South in pursuit of the perfect plant stock. They shared plants, grafting techniques and stories for years.
Charles and Elizabeth loved South Padre Island, and their Ocean Vista home. Charles could frequently be seen in the surf in his waders, stringer full of fish, and his goofy hats looking like the "old man and the sea".
In 2009, Charles and Elizabeth moved to Austin to be near family. The family thanks close Arlington friend and neighbor Neta Morse, Aaron Rodriguez for his help in Arlington, and Barbara Rains of Nashville for her caring and loving support.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth; his parents C. Bruce Malone and Lucy Batey Malone; two sisters Wilma Reeves and Diane Bright; brother William Malone; and grandson Michael Scott Malone. He is survived by his son C. Bruce Malone M.D. and wife Libby of Austin; granddaughters Ellen Elizabeth Hourigan and husband James of Sydney, Australia and Kathryn Ashcom Weiss and husband Nicholas of Los Angeles; great granddaughters Annabel and Charlotte Hourigan and extended family members in Tennessee and across the nation.
A graveside ceremony for Charles will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
