

Charles W. Porter, III (84) passed away on Friday, April 29, 2016. He was born September 14, 1931 at home in Monticello, Arkansas. He graduated with a BA from Arkansas A&M in 1953 and MA from University of Arkansas in 1956. He spent many summers doing post graduate work at LSU, University of Colorado, Kent State University and University of Wisconsin. After completing his MA, Charles moved to Texas where taught high school and then college for over 40 years. In December 1959, Charles married Anne Thomas of Charleston WV. Charles’s teaching career took him to Louisiana, Kentucky and finally back to Texas. He was a history and government instructor at Angelina College for over 30 years, retiring in 2003. In March 2000, he married Joan Mascioli of Northport, New York. After his retirement, he moved to Kyle, TX to be closer to his daughters. Joan and Charles loved to travel and went many places, including Ireland, Alaska, Germany, St. Martin, Canada, St. John and all over the US.
Charles loved teaching, reading, researching historical and political events, and spending time with his family. In addition to traveling with Joan, he enjoyed attending UT and UA football games and Angelina College basketball games. He was a “great dad” and was always supportive of family and students. He was deeply loved by his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anne T. Porter (1994), his parents Charles Porter, Jr. and Blanche Prestridge of Monticello, Ark. and his brother Clinton L. Porter of Houston, TX.
He is survived by his wife Joan M. Porter of Northport NY, daughter Patricia A. Porter of Kyle, TX; daughter Lea Anne Porter and son-in -law Michael Gianotti of Pflugerville, TX; step-daughter Laura Ann Doxey; and assorted nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 6th from 6-8pm at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar, Austin, TX. 78752. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 7th at 1:30pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3208 Exposition Blvd. Austin, TX. 78703. An additional visitation will be held Monday, May 9th from 5-7 pm at Gipson Funeral Home, 1515 S. Chestnut, Lufkin, TX 75901. A private family burial will be held at Whitehouse Cemetery in Lufkin.
