Chester Lamar Spaw, age 96, passed away on November 4, 2012, after a life lived to the fullest. Chester was born September 19, 1916, in Dripping Springs, Texas, but called Austin his home for most of his life. His parents were George Beverly Spaw and Willie Mae Peal Spaw. He married the love of his life, Maurine Elliott, on March 29 1941, and their marriage was blessed with two children, Steve and Nancy.
Chester was a man of many talents and interests. He served his country in World War II in the Pacific Theater as a Navy Seabee, 14th Naval Construction Battalion. He retired from the U.S. Post Office after 30 years of service, but continued his air conditioning business until he was 74, when he began a new and soon-to-be thriving business, Kilkenny Cakes, with partner, Gail Brown. At age 84, he sold the business and officially retired, devoting himself to family, friends, and his beloved Dripping Springs. He worked hard all his life, he never met a stranger, he loved his country, and he was truly a member of the greatest generation.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one brother, George, Jr. He is survived by his son, Steve and his wife, Patsy; his daughter, Nancy and her husband, Avarice McLain; a sister, Janis Blackburn; a brother, James; grandchildren Scott and Kim Spaw, Jeff and Brittany Spaw, Christy and Scott Biggers, Cindy and Chad Godfrey, Greg (who was killed in a car accident the following day on his way to help with arrangements for his grandfather) and Becky Spaw, and Stacy and Ray Akins; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Ace Alsup for his many years of loving care and friendship and the staff at Parsons House in Austin and Elgin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their tender care during his last months.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 8, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at Wallace Mountain Cemetery in Dripping Springs.
In lieu of flowers please make donations for the benefit of Greg Spaw's 7 children in care of Prosperity Bank, P. O. Box 626, Elgin, TX 78621 or any Prosperity Bank location payable to Becky Spaw.
