A native of Hearne, Texas, Clemmie was an Austin resident for over 75 years. She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Cummings, three sisters, one brother, and her husband, the late John A. Barclay. She is survived by her son John A. Barclay III and his wife Dolly of Austin, her daughter Frances Barclay Pearce and her husband Bill of Austin, her daughter Anne Barclay Reed and her husband David of Dallas, and her many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: John W. Fainter III and his wife Allison, of Dallas, Sally Anne Schmidt, of Houston, John A. (Andy) Barclay IV, and his fiancée Ashley Hamilton, of Austin, and Lynn D. Barclay and his wife Lindsay, of Austin, as well as her three great grandchildren, Riley Fainter, Ryan Fainter, and John Wells Fainter IV.
Clemmie was a 1935 graduate of the University of Texas and a loyal and passionate lifetime fan of UT athletics. She was a long time member of the St. David's Episcopal Church, the Longhorn Foundation, the UT Ex-Student's Association, Pi Beta Phi alumnae, the Austin Junior League, The Settlement Club of Austin, the Headliner's Club, and numerous other Austin community organizations. She was one of the original founders in 1959 of the Next-to-New Shop of St. David's Church and was a volunteer there for many years.
In addition to her own interests in the Austin community, Clemmie was active for over 50 years in supporting the Austin business and civic activities of her late husband, particularly in connection with his activities as a board member and chairman of St. David's Hospital and the St. David's Foundation. Clemmie supported and promoted the work of the hospital for many years, and was active in establishing the aquatic therapy pool at St. David's Medical Center. Her long and happy life has been an inspiration and a blessing to her family and friends; her kind and generous heart, wisdom, gracious manner, cheerful demeanor, gentle and loving spirit, and warm sense of humor will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
A memorial service in celebration of Clemmie's life will be held at 11:00am, on Monday, October, 24, 2011 at St. David's Episcopal Church, 301 E. 8th Street, Austin, Texas.
