Courtney James Evers

Courtney James "Doc" Evers of Borger and Austin TX was born March 12, 1917 to William J. "Willie" Evers and Mittie Kinard. He passed away April 14, 2010 at the age of 93. Courtney was born in McGregor and the family later moved to Austin, where he attended Austin High School. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1942 with two bachelor's degrees, in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. While at UT he played tennis, and he had a lifelong interest in playing and later in watching live tennis tournaments until health and age prevented him traveling. After graduation he moved first to Corpus Christi and then to Borger, Texas where he worked for Phillips Petroleum as a chemist for 38-1/2 years. He remained in Borger after his retirement and lived there for nearly sixty years. A Mason and a longtime member of the Loyal Order of Moose, he was a fixture at the Moose Lodge in Borger until that chapter was closed. In 1973 he established the Courtney J. Evers Centennial Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Chemical Engineering at UT. No one who knew him will deny that he was a true eccentric. Though a bit of a recluse he knew and cared about many people. Doc had passions for a lot of things, including Phillips Petroleum, the University of Texas, history, and planting trees which he had grown from seeds. Doc never married and had no children. He is survived by a nephew, Max, and niece, Marcia, both of Austin, nieces Ellen and Laura of Buffalo, New York and by his dear friends Charlie and Polly Lambert of Borger, and by numerous friends in the community. Service at Oakwood Cemetery Saturday April 24 at 2 pm. A memorial service in Borger will be held at a later date.
