Darrell Neyland passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2015. Darrell was born on January 30, 1925 to Carl E. and Flora Lee Neyland in Austin, Texas. He lived his entire life in Austin, attending area schools and graduating from Austin High School in 1943. Darrell enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and did his basic training and service in San Diego, CA. After WWII, Darrell returned to Austin where he worked for area contractors until forming his own homebuilding company; Southwest and Northwest Austin boast many of his homes.
He was recently recognized with a "Proclamation of Achievement" in building Austin by the mayor. Darrell finished his working career as a building inspector for the State of Texas. He enjoyed being part of two Texas Capitol renovations, the Governor's Mansion update, and other notable Austin landmark structures.
Known for his conscientious work, integrity, and yes, salty language, he was a man one could trust to get the job done right. Darrell was also a kind and gentle man, doing small and unnoticed deeds for others. Having grown up during the depression in a poor family, he always had a heart to help another who was struggling. Darrell had his own struggles, overcoming alcohol and smoking addictions. As a 40-year faithful attendee of Northland AA, he received and sponsored many others looking to find sobriety.
Darrell was married to Margaret B. Yoakum in 1950 and had three daughters, Sonna, Stephanie, and Ruthie. The family enjoyed summer trips to Colorado and New Mexico. As an avid angler and outdoorsman, Dad taught us to fish, identify rocks, and pick a sure winner at the horse races. After his divorce, he met and married Karen Grung, RN. Dad loved Karen dearly, writing her daily love notes and was so blessed to live out his life with her. He enjoyed all of his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He leaves a large family with wonderful memories.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Karen; daughters and sons-in-law, Sonna (George) Lumpkins, Stephanie (Jody) Huff, Ruthie (Doug) Scott; stepchildren, Jennifer (Skeeter) Davis, Shelly Leuzinger (Tim Ziegler), Harry Leuzinger (Celeste Treadway); thirteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress. Darrell's celebration of life will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Funeral Home Chapel.
Contributions can be made to Northland Alcoholics Anonymous.
