Darrellyn Hatchett Smith, age 76, of Austin, passed from this life on Monday, June 8, 2020 surrounded by loved ones after a severe hemorrhagic stroke. Darrellyn was born and raised in Augusta, Kansas on May 7, 1944. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Darrell Hatchett and the late Margaret Ray, and the sister of the late Jean Shaw. Darrellyn possessed a diverse and eclectic set of skills and interests. She had degrees from Southwest Texas State University with majors in art and computer science. Before retiring, Darrellyn worked for twenty-five years as a Disability Examiner for the Division of Disability and Determination Services. Outside of work, her interests included painting, quilting, sewing, reading, doing puzzles, watching CBS Sunday Morning and SYTYCD, cheering on the San Antonio Spurs, and anything related to FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi. She also loved getting caught up in her family’s interests, such that various family members would almost daily wake up to texts with articles or television stories about things her family loved. But most of all, she loved to travel and she loved her grandchildren (rarely missing a soccer or baseball game or dance competition or performance), and her favorite things were to combine the two. The family shares many memories of her and her grandchildren together in fun places such as Paris, Barcelona, Mexico, California, Hawaii, and, because she was a child at heart, several trips to various Disney parks.
Darrellyn is survived by her son, Scott Smith, and wife Della, of Buda; daughter Heather Schuelke, and husband Brooks, of Austin; four grandchildren: Jessica Rodriquez, and husband Leonard; Amara Smith; Kennedy Schuelke; and Ryan Schuelke; and a nephew Chris Shaw. Darrellyn is also survived by her life partner of thirty years, Ron Brown.
Private family services will be held Friday, June 12, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the American Heart Association.
