David Z. Lippmann passed away on September 12, 2015 in Austin, Texas, following a lengthy illness. He grew up in Galveston, Texas, where he graduated from Ball High School. He then enrolled in The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied chemistry and mathematics. Prior to graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Northern Europe, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He then completed his B.S. and M.S. degrees at The University of Texas at Austin and earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.
After working in industry in New Jersey for a decade, he returned to Texas, where he was a chemistry professor at Texas State University in San Marcos for almost fifty years. In addition to his teaching, he continued to pursue research in theoretical chemistry, authored a number of reviewed publications, received several patents, and was recognized for his reviews of submissions for publications on chemical education.
His interests extended well beyond chemistry. For example, he was the 2012 winner of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction contest, an international writing competition, in the category of fantasy. He was also a voracious reader, loved to write satire and limericks, and as recently as last summer completed a creative writing class sponsored by the Austin Public Library.
David is survived by his wife, Jane, brothers-in-law Joseph (Carrie) and Charles (Patricia) Neustein. He also has a number of cousins.
The family would like to express special thanks to doctors Matthew Stahlman, Jack Moncrief, Adam Schneider; their assistants Laura Calais, Eileen Costa, Barrett Moncrief, and Kimberly Tanner; as well as, to the many caring and thoughtful nurses, doctors and staff on 3 South of Seton Hospital who cared for David during the last weeks of his illness. Finally, we are very grateful to Mary Cooper and Mary Koffend from Accountable Aging and to Christine Celio, Palliative Care nurse at Seton, for their outstanding help and support.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, September 17, at 2:00 p.m. at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery on Hancock Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in David's memory to KMFA, the Austin Humane Society, or to your charity of choice.
