David Stegmann, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and colleague, died as he lived-- with grace and courage—on the 22nd of June. This sweet, passionate, honorable, hard-working man was devoted to his wife of 45 years, Peggy, his children, David and Christine and their spouses Louisa and Jonathan, and his beautiful grandchildren, Benjamin and Katherine. Dave was a great lover of animals and enjoyed many family pets, most recently his cats: Lily, whom he described as the "prettiest cat in Texas"; and Tiger Kitty, a stray who adopted him. He practiced 35 years as a civil engineer and took great pride in designing bridges, power plants, hospitals, schools and high-rise buildings. His interest in engineering started with his service in the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1957-1960. He received a Civil Engineering degree from Union College in Schenectady, NY. In addition to his family and work, Dave loved college football and watching his grandchildren play on St. Andrew's Episcopal School athletic teams. Any mention of Dave Stegmann would be incomplete without reference to his love of great food—particularly Spam, Dunkin Doughnuts and hot dogs. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Marion Stegmann, and his mother-in-law Josephine McNeill. He is survived by his five siblings: sisters Marion Endryck and her husband Monk; Patricia Wills; Ardith Harder; Sandra Alverson; and brother Rick Stegmann and his wife Nina. Other survivors include sister-in-law Patricia Kunz and her husband Robert, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues in Upstate New York, Oklahoma City and Austin, Texas. Special thanks to Dr. Carsten Kampe and the wonderful staff at the South Austin Cancer Center, Hospice Austin and David's nurse Shelley Baker, the St. Andrew's Episcopal School community, and Vickee Byrum. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 25th at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar Boulevard in Austin, Texas. St. Andrew's Chaplain Kurt Gerhard will officiate. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the St. Andrew's Episcopal School Financial Aid Fund at 1112 W. 31st St. Austin, TX 78705. David's exceptional kindness and generosity will be missed by all who knew him.
