MAJ(R) Donald M. "Don" Heilig, Sr. died in his home on October 27th, 2009. He was born March 4th, 1938 in Western North Carolina .He was proceeded in death by his parents Herman Heilig and Sarah Reed Heilig and his sister Sally Heilig Jones. He is survived by his wife Sue; son LTC (R) Donald M. "Deac" Heilig Jr. and his wife Rachel Crisostomo Heilig; daughter Angela Heilig Scallon and her husband Mike Scallon; his grandchildren, Donald M. "DJ" Heilig III, Drake Scallon, Colbie Scallon and Blayne Scallon; and his sister Patricia Heilig Poret. Don graduated from Clemson College with a BS in Industrial Management in 1962. He played quarterback for the Clemson Tiger football team. Don entered the Army after college as a Second Lieutenant. He served in the Field Artillery and served tours in the Republic of Vietnam in 1968 and 1972. He served in the 1st Infantry Division, Big Red One and as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Infantry with Military Advisory Command-Vietnam (MAC-V). His awards and decorations include National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1st OLC), Army Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal (6 Campaigns), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal (1st OLC), Air Medal (2nd OLC), Combat Infantryman's Badge, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star. He was an Expert with the .45 caliber pistol. He distinguished himself as a Soldier and Officer. He retired after serving honorably for 20 years. He went to work for the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC as the senior Logistics Manager and retired once again in 2000. Sue and Don have lived in Lakeway, Texas since retirement. A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Shepherd Memorial Park in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
