Doris, daughter of Hugh Edward Byrne and Marie Massing, grew up in Bellville, Illinois and attended St. Mary's Catholic Girl's School. She was married to Thomas A. Pace in 1947 in East St. Louis, Illinois. Doris, Thomas and daughters, Julie, Laura and Margaret moved their household to Huntsville, Alabama in 1956. She is survived by her husband, Richard D. Campbell, daughters, Julia Pickron, Laura Pace, Margaret Felder, Lesley Roth; sons Rick Campbell and Robert Bruce Campbell; eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Doris was a busy mother and homemaker, but made time in her life to be a Girl Scout leader, a PTA member and a member of the Huntsville Garden Club. She loved sewing and knitting and made beautiful clothes for her daughters. Thomas Pace was deceased in Huntsville in 1965. Doris was married to Richard D. Campbell in Huntsville in 1969, and added Richard's children, Rick, Bruce and Lesley to her family. Richard Campbell was employed by IBM, and they moved to Clear Lake, Texas, a suburb of Houston shortly after their marriage. Doris and Richard shared their interests in lapidary and jewelry-making and were active members of the Houston Gem and Mineral Society. In 1982, they moved to Austin, Texas. Recruited by Sister Gertrude Levy, they became active volunteers at Seton Northwest Hospital. Doris donated more than 10,000 hours of work at Seton Northwest Hospital. Doris and Richard were founding members of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and she became a Eucharistic Minister at her church and at Seton Hospital.
Doris was just as generous in her family life, caring for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We had wonderful holidays and family meals together, we spent lots of happy times tubing and picnicking on the Comal River in New Braunfels, Texas. Doris spent the last six years of her life battling the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Her husband Richard cared for her devotedly in their home, as she became increasingly disabled. She passed away peacefully in her sleep and has gone to be with Jesus in heaven. We will miss her lovely smile, her laughter, her love and compassion.
The family would like to thank Father Danny Garcia, Marianne with the Visiting Angels Program and Dr. Sheila Shung for their help and kindness to us.
