Her funeral and interment of ashes will take place on Monday, September 5, 2016, at 2:00 pm at St. Francis–by-the-Lake Episcopal Church, Canyon Lake, Texas. Her grandson, the Rev. Eric Hungerford, will be officiating.
Edith Rose, or "Edie," was the daughter of Wolcott F. and Nellie Sweeton Humphrey, was born in Canton, Connecticut, on October 22, 1927, where she lived throughout her childhood. She was the third of five children. She was a Canton High School Cheerleader, and was Valedictorian of their class of 1945.
She moved to Hartford, Connecticut where she received the degree of Registered Nurse from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing.
While in Hartford, she became an active member of the Episcopal Christ Church Cathedral, where she met, and later married, Donald Newell Hungerford in 1949, to whom she remained married to for 55 years, until his death in October 2005.
Donald became an Episcopal priest, and they moved to West Texas in 1956 with their two young daughters. After arriving there, they had two more children, a son and a daughter.
They started out in Snyder, then Big Spring, and finally Odessa. During the early years when she was raising her family, she remained active in the church serving on the altar guild and singing in the choir. As the rector's wife, she was generous and caring, and she shared in his ministry of serving the needs of the members of the church. She also supported her children a myriad of ways. She taught her children sewing and cooking. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girls Friendly Society leader.
Around 1970, she reentered the work force and became actively involved again professionally as an RN, in various capacities within the medical community in Odessa, notably as a head floor nurse and Head of Infection Control at Odessa Medical Center.
After she and Don retired in the early 1990's, they lived in Rolla, Missouri for two years, where he was serving as an interim rector, before moving to and settling at Canyon Lake, Texas. They became members of St. Francis–by-the-Lake, where she became an active participant of their chapter of the national organization of Daughters of the King, women dedicated to serving Christ in the ministry of prayer.
It was at Canyon Lake where she had the opportunity to host many family gatherings, and spend time doting on her three grandchildren.
After Don's death, she moved to Austin in 2007, to be closer to family.
Edie loved singing and music of all kinds as well as watching vintage movies and theater. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh at a good joke! Her love of nature was evident in her interest in birds, flowers, and houseplants of all kinds. She loved to read and instilled in her family a love for learning.
She is survived by her sisters Gladys Diters of Auburn, Maine and Margaret "Peggy" Hall and husband James of Granby, Connecticut; her four children: Dr. Ellen Schweers of Denton, Texas, Elizabeth Baker and spouse the Rev. Brock of Belmont, Massachusetts, Donald Hungerford and spouse Michelle of Austin, Texas, and Harriet Manning of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren: the Rev. Eric Hungerford and spouse Shyla of LaGrange, Texas, Catalina Hungerford of Austin, and Anne Baker of Belmont; and two great-grandchildren, Origen and Una Hungerford of LaGrange.
