Ed Grant passed away on October 11, 2011 in Austin, Texas, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death, on December 19, 2001, by his beloved wife of 55 years, Margret (Margo) Darcy Grant (Pictured Above). His only sister, Virginia Grant Taylor, also preceded him in death.
Ed was born on February 23, 1923, to Ora Cleone Rowland Grant and Edward Guy Grant, Sr., in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Ed's family moved to Austin in the early 1930's. He graduated from S.F. Austin High, where he met his future wife, Margo. He also attended the University of Texas.
He began his 23 year career with the United States Marine Corps in June of 1941. He served the Corps with distinction and was a combat veteran of Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Iwo Jima, where he received a Naval Letter of Commendation. He also served in the Korean War and on Okinawa, during the Vietnam War.
In 1957, he was commissioned as a Warrant Officer and was assigned to head the Marine Guard Detachment at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. He retired from the Corps in 1964 and joined the staff of The Manlius School, a military prep school in Manlius, NY.
Ed and Margo returned to Austin in 1969 and he joined the Texas Department of Human Services as an auditor in April of 1970. In his 18 year career with the Department, he rose to the position of Deputy Inspector General. He retired from the Department on August 31, 1988.
Ed is survived by his niece, Lisa Sears Croft, and her husband, Charles (Chuck), of Austin. In addition, his niece, Judith Williams Bywater, of Round Rock; grand niece Rene Bywater Barajas and husband, David Barajas and their daughter, Megan Barajas, all of Austin. Also by his grand niece Misha Williams and her son, Nathaniel Williams, both of Seattle, WA.; and by his nephew, Lee R. (Pete) Maulding, and his wife Pam; and by his God Son, Javier Montesinos, all of Austin. A special thank you is extended to his fellow Marine, John (Jack) Burke, of Buda, for his friendship and Esprit de Corps over the past 50+ years; and to the management and staff of Sommerset Townhomes, where Mr. Grant resided for the past 10 years.
Interment of Mr. and Mrs. Grant's ashes will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, in San Antonio, at 11:00 am, Thursday, November 10, 2011, which is the 236th Birthday of the Marine Corps. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Weed-Corley-Fish, 3125 N. Lamar, Austin, at 3:00 pm on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2011.
Ed was a dedicated member of the "Greatest Generation". His love for Margo, family, Country and the Marine Corps, as well as his meticulously maintained automobiles, will be missed!
