Elaine Wilson Burden of Austin, Texas passed away on March 1st, 2026, at the age of 80. She was born in Austin, the third and youngest child of Charlie and Edith Wilson. Elaine grew up in a home built by her father in what was then rural south Austin. Her early years were divided between time spent at the South Austin home less than a mile from the Goodnight Motel and Hill’s Café, her Daddy’s cabin on the north shore of Lake Travis, and fishing trips to other area lakes and the Texas coast.
A nurturing soul all her life, she began babysitting her nieces and nephews while still in elementary school. A loyal and caring friend, she valued connection to those around her. Elaine was very involved in church from an early age, attending Central Assembly of God, where she sang in the choir in her high school and college years. She was responsible for bringing several family members to follow Christ, and her faith remained a strong foundation throughout her life.
Elaine attended Pleasant Hill Elementary School, Fulmore Middle School (now Lively Middle School), and Travis High School (class of 1964). She enrolled in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education in 1968.
Elaine held both primary and secondary teaching certifications and went on to teach in the Austin, Round Rock, and Pflugerville school districts. An excellent artist and innovative teacher, Elaine taught both the basics and exposed students to additional facets of art such as silk screening, hand-thrown ceramics, paper making, and Asian printing. She supervised student artwork for school yearbooks, prepared student art exhibitions, and prepared visual art education for computer classes. Under her tutelage, many of her students attained regional and national Scholastic Art Awards and she inspired several of her students to become art teachers. She also sponsored 31 student teachers from The University of Texas at Austin. Elaine taught an estimated 36,000+ students in a teaching career that spanned 31 years. She was awarded Outstanding Teacher in 1983-1984 while at Fulmore Middle School and the Wal-mart Foundation’s Teacher of the Year in 1997 while at Cedar Valley Middle School.
In the later years of her teaching career, she and her husband Robert (Bob) followed a longtime dream and opened the Oak Grove House bed and breakfast in Round Top, Texas. This endeavor brought in many repeat customers from all over the nation, many of whom became longtime friends. Elaine’s excellent cooking, eye for interior design, and open, gracious personality had much to do with the success of the business over its 14+ years of operation. She and Bob eventually returned to Austin to spend more time with their grandchildren.
Elaine and Bob were married for 57 years, a union that began with a double wedding that included her first cousin Kay Gooding and fiancé Reverend Sandford Williams. Elaine and Bob proved to be a compatible couple that shared a love of art, history, fine foods, good conversation, and travel, visiting 20 countries around the world during their time together.
Elaine leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and steadfast devotion to the people and passions that shaped her life. She brought compassion and beauty into every space she entered—whether in the classroom, where she inspired generations of young artists and future educators; in her home and bed and breakfast, where her gracious spirit made every guest feel like family; or in the quiet, everyday moments of love she shared with those closest to her. Rooted in faith, guided by an artist’s eye, and sustained by a generous heart, Elaine’s influence lives on in the countless lives she touched. The lessons she taught, the beauty she created, and the love she gave so freely will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents Charlie and Edith, older sister Jean Arthur Nuse, older brother Charles Wilson, and nephew Colby Nuse. She is survived by husband Robert Burden, son Damon and wife Andi, son Brent and wife Beth, and grandchildren Aleah, Quade, and Jesse.
The family would like to thank the staff at Beacon Hospice-Austin and Beth Burden for the dedicated care and compassion they showed Elaine in her final weeks.
