She was born at home in Kovar, Texas on September 6, 1925 to Charles J. Kalina and Bertha V. (Holubec) Kalina. She attended schools in Kovar and Smithville, Texas, before moving to Austin to attend Durham’s Business College. While living in a boarding house on Lavaca Street, she met her future husband, Frank J. Olsovsky.
Elaine first attended St. Austin’s Catholic Church and then became a parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Church with her husband. Her faithful spiritual dedication was demonstrated through routinely engaging and volunteering within the church community. Elaine was also a member of KJZT.
Elaine and her husband adopted their son, Frank J. Olsovsky, Jr. at birth in 1958 and their daughter Margaret Olsovsky at birth in 1960. She stayed involved with the Home of the Holy Infancy Adoption Agency for many years.
Elaine began working a Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) at Camp Mabry, then worked at the Texas Employment Commission, before changing careers to work in the school cafeteria at Burnet Jr. High to arrange her work schedule to accommodate her children’s’ school terms. She returned to work at TXDPS, retiring around 1985. She also found time to support and root for her children and grandchildren at their various competitions, sporting events and scouting events.
Elaine and her five siblings grew up speaking Czech in the home and learned to speak English at school. She continued to speak Czech fluently throughout her life and enjoyed teaching everyone a few words and phrases. She also learned how to cook, sew, garden, and farm, and used these talents to lovingly take care of her family. Her Kolaches were legendary; her Chicken Pot Pie was perfection. Her house was the center of family gatherings and holiday celebrations. She welcomed all and fed everyone.
Elaine is survived by her daughter, Margaret Olsovsky, twin grandsons Nathan and Jared, daughter-in-law, Teri Olsovsky, granddaughter Erin, and great-grandchildren Reagan, Ryan and Grace, and a large extended family of in-laws and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank J. Olsovsky, Sr., and her son, Frank Jr., and siblings, Raymond, Margaret, Della, LaNell, and Charles.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Brookdale Westlake Hills Assisted Living Center and St. David’s Hospice and Family Care. The staff provided tender and loving care to our mom and grandmother. We know her life was enriched and her passing was softened due to their support.
Mom, we’ll be ok. Now you can rest.
