

After nearly 60 years, a love story for the ages comes to an end with the passing of Alberto A. Gutierrez and Elia G. Gutierrez. Longtime residents of Corpus Christi, Texas, Alberto passed away April 26, 2018, Elia passed away April 30, 2018 in Austin, Texas.
Their marriage led to the births of their four children, Alynn Riley, Alda Thompson, Alban Gutierrez and Alane Gutierrez. They were the proud grandparents to their seven grandchildren, Andrew and Zachary Riley, Elias and Isaac Thompson and Alton, Austin, and Alexis Gutierrez.
Alberto and Elia met at Del Mar college in Corpus Christi, Texas where their love story began. Elia wouldn't marry Alberto before he served in the US Army from 1956-1958. She made him wait until he completed his service to ensure he would come back to her. During that time Elia earned her bachelor's degree in Education at Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas where she remains as a distinguished alum. When Alberto returned from service he wed Elia and earned his bachelor's degree in education at Corpus Christi State University. Elia continued her education while having children and earned her master's degree in Bilingual Education. Alberto served as a social worker, then became a US Dept of Agriculture Federal Agent and played a key role in developing the food stamp program. Elia become one of the most beloved teachers in Corpus Christi spending over 30 years in the classroom.
Both were giving of themselves, Alberto served as Scout Leader and volunteer for Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years. He and Elia were very involved with the Community of Corpus Christi often volunteering in a variety of organizations including: Reading literacy, Area Council on Aging and countless others.
Burial Services will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2018 – 2:00 pm at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery 9974 IH -37, Corpus Christi, TX 78410
