Elizabeth was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1949 to Mary and Timothy Culhane. She was the middle child of five - raised with her siblings Patricia, John, Timothy, and Michael on James's Street and later on Navan Road. Her parents owned and operated a grocery store and all of the children including Elizabeth helped at the shop. Elizabeth was a friendly and precocious child and always a favorite of the nuns that ran her schools, St. James's Primary School and later Loreto Convent Secondary School. She completed and attained her Leaving Certificate with Honors before receiving an Associate Degree in Banking Administration.
She was working as a manager in the computer department of AIB bank when she met Peter Brady. They were married on October 3, 1974 in front of friends and family at the Dublin Zoological Gardens. They had three children while living in Dublin before they embarked on a new life adventure in 1985 when they moved the family to the United States. After a brief stint outside of Chicago, they settled in Austin, Texas in the summer of 1987 and never left.
Upon arriving in the U.S., Elizabeth took on the challenge of changing careers and went back to school to earn her nursing degree. Nursing was Elizabeth’s true calling and she was loved by coworkers and patients alike.
In 2011, Elizabeth had a severe stroke, suffering from aphasia and right-side paralysis. She was given five years to live, but well exceeded that time allowing her to see the birth of all of her grandchildren. Her perseverance during the time after her stroke was something to behold.
Elizabeth was joyful, fun, quick to laugh, hard-working, kind, loving and fierce. She is survived by her husband, Peter Brady of Austin, Texas; her daughter, Laura York and husband Andrew York of Austin, Texas; her son, Paul Brady and wife Nicole Brady of Austin, Texas; and her beloved grandchildren, Laura Marler, Sophia Marler, Sloane Brady, Pierce Brady, Neve Brady and Brady York. She is also survived by her siblings - sister Patricia McGeer and husband Walter McGeer, sister-in-law Lisa Schlotman Culhane, brother Timothy Culhane and wife Breda Culhane and brother Michael Culhane. She is predeceased by her parents, Mary and Timothy Culhane, her brother John Culhane and her daughter Susan Mary Brady.
The family wishes to thank Austin Speech Labs, Buckner Villas and Hospice Austin for their kindness and care of Elizabeth; as well as the many years of at-home care by Yolanda Miller, Sandy Fuller, and Sallie Schroeder.
