Eric Van Tongerloo, 84, passed away on December 11, 2025 in Austin, Texas. For more than 60 years, he shared a deep and enduring marriage with his beloved wife, Anita, building a life rooted in love and an unwavering commitment to family.
Due to his father’s service in the Belgian diplomatic corps, Eric spent his early years in South Africa, before the family relocated to Canada. It was there he met Anita, whose father was serving in a Colombian diplomatic post. Their marriage united the two countries, and marked the beginning of a life spanning continents and cultures.
A brilliant and dedicated scholar, Eric earned his Ph.D. in Physics. He went on to become an early pioneer in the semiconductor industry, contributing to the growth of a field that would shape modern technology both domestically and internationally. Over the years, he worked for several groundbreaking companies, eventually playing a pivotal role in the early development of Austin’s Silicon Hills.
Above every professional accomplishment and worldly experience, Eric took greatest pride in the family he and Anita created. He was best known for his warmth, generosity, charisma, and genuine interest in others, where family and friends were always his priority. He remained deeply involved in the lives of all four of his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Bapo”. From water polo games to soccer matches, and music recitals to graduations, Bapo reveled in his grandchildren’s achievements.
Eric was happiest when gathered around a table, especially during his cherished Sunday lunches, where family, friends, and neighbors were welcomed into a home filled with conversation, laughter, and connection. His children and grandchildren looked to him as a model of selflessness, kindness, and how to live a life centered on love for others.
Eric is survived by his wife, Anita, his children Tania, Sonia, and David, and their spouses, as well as his four cherished grandchildren.Gabby, Sara, Jackson and Anna. He is also survived by his sister, Greta and his brother and sister-in-law, Fredy and Angela and many cousins, nephews, nieces and lifelong friends.
A service honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 16, 2026, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 5455 Bee Caves Road, West Lake Hills, TX.
