Joy was born to Ramon Coulter and Maggie Adell Estes Coulter on May 4, 1935 in San Augustine, Texas. As a child, she was raised on a traditional farming homestead where she helped her large family grow cotton, watermelon and various other crops, as well as raising cattle. She learned the core values of hard work, endurance, and grit which laid the foundation for the person that she would be throughout her life.
As a young woman, Joy spent time in other Texas cities before settling in Austin, Texas in the 1950’s where she would establish a household of her own and raise three beautiful daughters; Judith Gail, Lesa Carol, and Desiree. She worked various jobs throughout her career, including keypunch operator, which was a key role for emerging businesses during that time. Joy inevitably found her tenure with the Railroad Commission of Texas, and retired as a Supervisor for the Oil & Gas Division where she made many friends and long lasting relationships.
Joy had an extremely vivacious, yet down to earth personality with a splash of southern charm, that made everyone feel at home in her presence. She was a resilient and tenacious woman, yet, simultaneously a caring person that would give everything she possibly could to anyone in need. Joy found her muse working in her vegetable and flower garden. She loved growing daisies, roses and her favorite, tomatoes. Her fondness of nature stemmed from her childhood upbringing. Not only did she adore gardening, but she also had a love for baking cakes for all to enjoy and cooking everything! Joy loved her family above all and was especially devoted to her roles as a mother and a granny. Making endless memories with her family is what she cherished most in life.
