She has resided in Austin since 1954. Nana was everything to her family. She married Jack Mathis in 1954. In 1982, she married Ray McDaniel. Ray and mother lived a wonderful life until his death in 2001.
She is survived by her children; Jack and Cheryl Mathis, Jacksboro, Texas; Marion and Kenny Robertson, Ann and Steve Baker, and Mary Holt, all of Austin. Her one surviving sister, Rose Marie Moehlmann, from Brenham, Texas along with many nieces and nephews who thought that Florence was their favorite Aunt.
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and another one due in February. Nana was blessed with a loving stepfamily; Julie and Steve Tunnell; Clark and Glenda McDaniel; Steve and Barbara McDaniel along with their families.
Mother defined the term nurturer. She was a cook, gardener, seamstress and much more. Her yard was always full of flowers and she loved being outdoors. She could cook anything, and if she didn’t know how, she would teach herself. Along with help from her neighbor, when all of her children were in elementary school she taught herself to sew. It was not unusual for us to have a new dress for school every day. Our homes will be forever decorated with Christmas items she made. Every grandchild received a handmade Christmas stocking as well as a cross-stitched baby blanket.
Mother’s faith carried her through the trials and tribulations of her life. She was baptized as a Catholic, and we were able to have a Priest perform last rites for her to let her know she was absolved of all sin and ready to meet Jesus.
Nana endured two surgeries in the last 3 months. She was very frail, but her heart was strong. She passed away at Austin’s Christopher House. We are very grateful for the loving care she received.
We will miss mother dearly and she will be in our hearts forever.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice Austin, Christopher House.
Services will be held at Cook Walden/Forest Oaks on Monday, February 2, with a visitation at 9:00 a.m. and services at 10:00 a.m.
