He was born Franklynn Edward Rieger, on September 8, 1938, to Edmunda and Frank A. Rieger, Jr. of Austin, who both preceded him in death. He is survived by daughters, Kim Straub and husband, Joe of Austin and Karen Conrado and husband, Alex Cone of Austin and 5 grandchildren, Jake, Jessica and Justin Straub and Aaron and Ethan Conrado.
He attended Austin High School and worked at his father's auto mechanic shop, Rieger's Garage, which was a well-known business, on 5th Street, in Austin, for many years. Franklynn loved riding motorcycles with his buddies when he was young. He also had an affinity for cars and while employed at his dad's garage, raced stock cars in Oak Hill, Austin, San Antonio, and Belton for many years, with his father, "Popo" being one of his pit crew members on the Rieger Racing Team.
Franklynn spent his adult years as a union iron worker, on many construction projects in Austin, helping to shape the Austin skyline. He lived briefly in Arizona, coming back to his beloved Texas, at the announcement of his first grandson. The grandkids knew him as "Papa Frank". He loved the Old West and especially western movies. His knowledge of western characters and the old singing cowboys along with their music was unmatched - evidenced by the fact that he occasionally was a guest DJ on a local radio station where listeners enjoyed his expertise.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at New Hope Church, 6020 S. 1st Street, Austin, Texas, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please direct all contributions to the Austin Animal Center, to help the "critters". Happy Trails Papa Frank. Rest in Peace.
