Fred Leland Ruthven

Fred Leland Ruthven A loving husband, father and friend, Fred Leland Ruthven passed away at age 66 on Monday, October 6, 2003. He was born on September 28, 1937 in San Diego, California to Fred Warren Ruthven and Mary Louise Norris Ruthven, and subsequently grew up in Donna, Texas. Fred served in the United States Navy from 1955 – 1976, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in charge of Air Traffic Control. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, Naval Achievement Medal and several Naval Good Conduct Medals. After his military retirement, he relocated to McAllen, Texas to begin a career in Commercial Real Estate, which led him to open his real estate office of Tropical Realty. Being successful in this field, he was elected President of the Board of Realtors. After retiring from Real Estate, he relocated to Austin and began working for H & R Block where he served as an office manager. Fred’s loves were cooking, his Scottish heritage, his pets (Kaylee, Mutt, and KK) and college football (especially “his” Texas Aggies and Baylor Bears). He enjoyed backyard barbecues and family gatherings. Fred was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He will be greatly missed. His parents preceded him in death. Survivors include his loving wife, Katie Glass Ruthven; daughters, Terri DeKock and husband August, Judy Kutugata and husband Jorge; step-son, Martin Glass and wife Ellen; grandchildren, Courtney, Brent and Clay DeKock, Kandice and Matthew Kutugata; step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Travis Glass; sisters, Kay Rij and Sally Whitney; step-mother, Gwen Ruthven; mother-in-law, Evie Hays; sister-in-law, Betty Mott; nieces, nephews, extended families and many friends. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, with Dr. Gordon Smith officiating.
