

George Washington Cope, Jr., age 84, died Tuesday, January 30, 2007. He was born on January 3, 1923 in Rutledge, Tennessee in a log cabin on a mountainside. Georges family soon moved to San Angelo, Texas where he was raised. He played the tuba in the High School and Salvation Army Bands. George proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he met his bride of 61 years. George and his wife, Joyce, attended San Angelo Junior College for two years until they moved to Austin, Texas in 1951 where George went on to graduate from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He then went to work for the City of Austin as a health inspector for 20 years until he retired in 1978. George and his wife raised three children. George was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church for more than 20 years. George was a bee keeper, bowler, football enthusiast, and devoted Longhorn fan. Due to Georges gentle nature, sweet disposition, and huge heart, he was a second Dad to many. HOOK EM GEORGE George was survived by his son, George W. Cope, III; two daughters, Janna E. Whitt and Gay W. Wallace; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Thelma Pearce. Visitation will be held Friday, February 2, 2007, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2007, at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at the Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
