George Lacy Culver Jr., 81, of Austin, Texas, passed away on January 12, 2026, after a lengthy illness. Known to family and friends as “George Jr.,” he will be fondly remembered for his humor, warmth, and steadfast love for those closest to him.
Born on July 6, 1944, in Minden, Louisiana, George was the son of the late George Lacy Culver Sr. and Larisa C. Coffey. He spent his formative years in Gary, Indiana, where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1962. Shortly after graduation, he proudly served four years in the United States Air Force, an experience that shaped his discipline, integrity, and sense of service.
In 1969, George married Carole Garrett, with whom he shared many years of devotion and laughter. Together, they raised two beautiful children—instilling in them the same values of loyalty, humor, and perseverance that defined George’s and Carole’s life together.
A hardworking and loyal employee, George built a long and successful career at Inland Steel Company before his retirement. Outside of work, he cherished simple pleasures—watching basketball, football and embarking on road trips to visit family across the country. Whether heading to Evansville to see in-laws, back to Texas to visit his parents and siblings, or up to Ohio to see his sister, George’s love of family always guided his travels.
Those who knew George best remember his infectious laughter and quick wit. He was known among his siblings for playful debates about who was the “best looking,” a running joke that continued well into adulthood. His humor and warmth brought light to every family gathering, and his nieces and nephews will remember “Uncle George” for his teasing and big-hearted spirit.
After courageously fighting cancer, George relocated from his longtime home of Gary, Indiana to Austin in 2024 to be closer to his family, embracing his final years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole, and both of his parents, George and Larisa.
Remaining to cherish George’s memory are his son Greg (Kelly) Culver, daughter Genaya (Phil) Chambers, grandchildren Ayden Chambers and Auriel Chambers; brother, Ronald Culver, sisters Karen Culver White and Beverly Culver; his devoted caregiver and niece, Kristen White. George’s numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends will miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas. Viewing will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. A private family interment will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
