George was born on March 21, 1938, to parents Theresa Gallardo and Eulalio Gutierrez in Houston, Texas and was the oldest of three children. In his younger years his brother, sister, and cousins (Butch, Jesse and Joe) to name a few of his many cousins were inseparable always playing sports, going to dances, family gatherings doing normal kid things. As a young man, George proudly served in the US Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960 and two years inactive. Once he was out of the service, he found his way into a career and a family where he and his wife Gloria Arriaga lived in the Houston area. They raised their family in the country on the outskirts of Houston until George got a job in the Austin area and moved his family to Austin in 1984. He then later remarried to Carol Croake in the mid-nineties and extended his family with two more kids. He retired from Texas School for the Blind in Austin and worked most of his life in the landscape field. He was a passionate green thumb who helped so many over the years with his knowledge of horticulture.
George loved, barbecuing, cooking, scuba diving in the ocean, surf fishing, being outdoors, hanging out with his plants and gardening, gathering with friends, dancing while listening to all kinds of music and loving his grandchildren. He was a sports fan who loved to watch the Longhorn games and was a diehard Houston Oilers-Texans fan.
He was a loving father and Papa.
He was a beautiful person who shared joy and happiness wherever he went. Anyone who met George loved him. He had the best charismatic smile and could always make you feel welcome. He never met a stranger and would always see the good in people when they didn’t see it in themselves. George was always willing to help others at the drop of a hat. He had lots of friends who loved and admired him dearly.
He leaves behind Son George Gutierrez Jr. (Allison), Daughter Gena Gutierrez, Son Gary Gutierrez (Amy) and Stepdaughter Jennifer Croake.
