He graduated from Eastland High School in 1945 then enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin to run track. Gordon received his Bachelor's degree in Business in 1949. His greatest joy was attending UT football games – always arriving early to watch the warm up and staying until "The Eyes of Texas" was played. He loved celebrating at Scholz Garten and donated a set of longhorns to adorn their doorway.
He retired at the age of 55 so he and his wife, Bobbye Jean, were able to fulfill their wanderlust. Their favorite vacation spot was Ireland. Gordon always presented a Texas flag that had flown over the Capital to a local barkeep and led the crowd in a rousing "Yellow Rose of Texas".
Gordon had a fun-loving and compassionate spirit. He loved his pets, sports, genealogy and the Masonic Lodge. His proudest accomplishments included entry into Texas First Families and his 50-Year Masonic Service Emblem. He was also a long-time member of University Avenue Church of Christ.
Gordon had a lengthy illness but – with the excellent care of his wife – he was able to stay home with exceptional caregivers for four years. The family wishes to thank Debbie Pearson and Nurse Case Management for their continued support.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Holbrook Cooper and his father, Thornton Cooper.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Bobbye Jean (Tullos) Cooper; his daughter, Kyle Wells and her husband, Bill and their two children, Andrew and Jonathan; his daughter, Kelley Cooper McClure and her husband, Gary McClure.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8th at Austin Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions can be made to Masonic Lodge #12 Scholarship Fund, 207 W. 18th Street, Austin, TX 78701
