He was born at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS to Harry Lewis Loflin Sr. and Alma (Smith) Loflin. His mother always said he was a “much wanted” child, as she was nearing forty when he was born. Harry graduated Central High School in Jackson, MS and met Nancy Sue Black when he was a Senior and she was a Junior. He obtained a scholarship from the Navy and graduated from the University of Mississippi (Ole’ Miss) with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering in 1952. Harry and Nancy were married four days later on June 5th, 1952. They lived that first year in Virginia and resided in Fredericksburg. Harry was a Marine Lieutenant at Quantico Basic School and was then attached to Fort Sill, Oklahoma Artillery. Harry was sent to Camp Pendleton, California, where they lived seven miles from the Pacific Ocean in Vista, California. He then became part of the Third Marine Division during their second year of their marriage and was stationed in Japan to replace the fighting First Division Marines. Thankfully, while awaiting the rotation into Korea, the Korean Armistice was signed.
After returning from Japan, he used his Chemical Engineering degree and went to work for Ethyl Corporation in Houston, TX. Their son Brooks Alan Loflin was born there in 1956. They were transferred in 1957 to the Ethyl plant in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where a second son was born, Mark Bradley (Brad) Loflin. They spent many years raising their children in Baton Rouge. Harry worked at several chemical plants across the nation including a year outside of New York City with Lummus Corporation as a Start-Up Engineer and two South Carolina plants in Orangeburg and Columbia before returning to Ethyl’s Houston plant in 1989.
Harry and Nancy then retired in 1990 to Austin, TX where they had 27 wonderful years of retirement. They traveled, enjoyed their son’s families and were hands-on with their five grandchildren. During their 28th year of retirement, Harry suffered a stroke and had tough times physically, but good times as well for the last 15 months. He still kept his sweet spirit and loved the LORD. Nancy and Harry both very much enjoyed their church, Austin Baptist, near their home in the hills of Northwest Austin.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry Lewis Loflin and Alma Loflin and his brother, John Loflin. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy Loflin of Austin, TX; his son Brooks and wife Lisa of Austin; his son Brad of San Antonio; and five grandchildren, Cory Loflin and Heather Loflin of Austin, Sarah Goble and husband Coty of San Antonio, and Hannah Loflin and Jonathan Loflin of San Antonio.
Everyone who met Harry loved him, especially Nancy of course. He was adored by his children and grandchildren. He was the best husband, father and grandfather – a most generous and loving man. He was quiet (almost shy) but always had a kind word and a smile. Harry will be greatly missed by all. Please join us in remembrance and celebration of his life on Saturday, December 16th, 2:30 PM, at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral home, 9700 Anderson Mill Road
