Helen Lorraine Anderson, of Austin Texas, passed away Friday morning at the age of 87 peacefully at the Ledgestone Care Facility in Dripping Springs, Texas. She was the beloved daughter of Otto Elmer Schwartz and Lorene Ellen Johnson.
Helen, who was born in 1938, was a vibrant woman throughout life. Having grown up on a farm with her sister and two brothers. She attended William B. Travis High School, where she was a member of the Rebelette Drill Team. After graduation Helen soon found living in the city of Austin was what she preferred. When asked about growing her own food she would often reply, “that is what grocery stores are for.”
Active throughout her life, Helen was an avid bowler who bowled for many years and participated in many local, state, and national tournaments. It was not uncommon for her to bowl a 200+ game, much to the delight of her teammates. It would also be while bowling that she met Dayton Grumbles who would become someone she cared for deeply. Helen was a devoted member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where she held many leadership roles such as Treasurer, and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Guild. Helen also enjoyed travelling as well, often speaking fondly of her trips, especially London, Italy, and Hawaii. Later in life, she also became an active volunteer within the Austin Senior Center, serving as receptionist, secretary of the advisory board, and leader of the Bunco group.
Sometimes referred to as a bit of a spitfire, Helen was and could be quite the character. Her wit and humor would often keep those around her laughing heartily at a well-placed comment or joke, and she never hesitated to stand up for what she believed was right.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Lorene Schwartz; her brother in law Ralph McClendon; sister in law Nelda Schwartz; her two husbands Perry Baker and Elmer (Andy) Anderson; and her daughter, Cheryl Baird.
She is survived by her two grandsons, Craig and Will Baird; her son in law Lee Baird; her sister, LaVerne McClendon; Her brother, Leo Schwartz; her youngest brother and his wife, Lloyd and Shirley Schwartz; along with a great many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Finally, she is survived by her life partner, Dayton Grumbles.
Her memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2128 Barton Hills Dr. Austin, TX 78704 on July 26th. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mark’s would be greatly appreciated.
Although she is no longer with us, Helen will always be remembered for a life well lived.
