I lost contact with Helen when she changed departments.  We worked together in the City of Austin Public Works Department back in the 80's.  I had hoped that our paths would cross again, but alas it never happened.  Helen, if you read this now, I thought of you often throughout the years with warm memories.  You were a spicy character that I didn't always know how to react to, but I always admired you for being able to speak your mind.  Until we meet again.



We are so lucky to have known Helen.  She is a very special person who always added a sparkle to any gathering and always showed an interest in others.  She was truly a gifted person.  We will always remember her and have fond memories of her.  God bless Helen Marie Dunn.

I worked with Helen for several years as her co-worker and supervisor. She was always ready to take on difficult issues when they arose and was a great employee advocate. Dearest Helen, working with you at SWS was such an adventure and you made coming to work worthwhile, especially with visits.  I have you to thank when folks say I am a strong individual--you taught me so much.  Before I forget, you will be singing with Angels now; I can recall your sweet voice singing a Spanish song to a co-worker friend about BESOS!  I always thought of you every time that song was played and most definitely from now on.  Well kiddo, I'm sending a big BESO up to you.  I will miss you.  Heaven is that much richer because you're there and I will be looking for you to share a joke and to hear your heavenly voice once again.

Helen was never a stranger. From the first hello she was your friend. I was so happy the day we finally met face to face. If you were a complete stranger and had just met helen she would have change the way you see the kindness in a person she was so intellegnt and yet so modest and kind. Helen Dunn was one of the first people I met at the City of Austin on October 4, 1984.  She was my initiation to a true "good olde Texas gal"...a member of the "Willie's Family" and my direct supervisor.  On a Sunday, shortly after we met, she called me at home asking me to be her taxi.  She needed to go to several stores to cash checks to bail someone out of jail.  We proceeded to visit all of the Safeways and HEB grocery stores cashing $100.00 checks at each.  We went to her apartment before the jail, only to find her friend waiting!! We sure had a great time cashing checks though.    I have many similar memories as a result of our friendship.  She was a "go to" person who would provide a whole new perspective on life.  I always knew I could call Helen anytime things got rough, and she'd help me through.  I'll miss her sisterly ways, caring heart and devotion to those around her.  I consider myself blessed to have experienced her laughter, stories and zest for life, if only for a short time.  She was a wonderful, and true "Good Olde Texas Gal".



May God wrap his arms of comfort around all the family and friends that miss Helen and give assurance of His Love and Peace.  Her caring and love for others were displayed daily as she focused on finding a way to assist employees with their needs. Our work team will greatly miss the sparkle and fun that Helen shared with all of us at SWS.  Rest in peace....



Helen, you were the angel that took me through two major loses, my Mother, Angelita and Husband, Gabriel. You were full of laughter, love and life. My children grew up knowing you as a second Mom. Dear God,    You have already meet this Angel named, "Helen Dunn". As a matter of fact, I know you have because she was made in your likeness. She showed us here on earth the way to care for another human being, while having her own belief and having her own way of doing things. In closing we will all miss this Angel named Helen, but we must keep in mind that she has paid her dues here on earth and is going home to receive her crown.    I have learned from Helen that alot of people overlook a unique stone with a different color. Just because it is something that people are not used to seeing, we as people have to keep in mind that Diamonds come in a wide variety of colors. Helen was a unique and different color diamond.  Those of us that took the time to see her for who she was got a chance to see the light shine through this rare diamond. I hope to see you one day at the pearly gates of HEAVEN.

She was and still is an outstanding lady. She cared for so many people and treated them with love even when she had to scoll them. She was our mother and most of all our friend. She would tell you straight forward how things would be done and if you did not do as she said. She would let you know. When the time comes we will see you again my friend. This is not the end but the start of a new journey.



It seems like I have known Helen forever. As a manager in the City of Austin, some of my earliest memories were of Helen helping or defending an employee with a problem. She always stood up for those in need. Helen and I were sometimes on the opposite side of the fence, but there was no one whose viewpoint I valued more. She would always go to bat for someone that she felt was not getting a fair shake from supervisors or managers. I knew I could count on her unvarnished opinion. Over the years, we grew to be close friends, and I will always love, respect, and miss her. Rest in peace, Helen, and be with God.



To Helen's family, I know youal have lost a rare jewel, a precious rock, and a strong link and the chain.My prayers are with youal during this time of loss.  Helen is my Girlfriend, and she told every man that she loved them and they were all her boyfriends. Helen touch everybody some way or another, she would be, and do whatever it took to get you up on your feet and willing to go on your journey. One vivid memory comes to mind when I think of Helen... When my mother died about 8 years ago, I was sitting at a table and Helen came up from behind me, put her arm around me, and gave me a big hug. Without saying a word, she made me feel that I was genuinely cared for, and that she shared my grief. Thank you Helen. I will miss you.

When I think of Helen, I remember all of the times that we shared music and would tease each other about our work or share a joke to help get through the day and the latest crisis.  She took her job very seriously and always gave it and the City her best.  There are so many employees in Solid Waste Services that benifited from her thoughtfullness and compassion as she went about her work.     Now she is gone and we are sad, but our memories of her strengthen us. Words do not do justice for her. To her family let me tell you she was a southern girl and the only  person I know who called her mother "Momma" and her Dad "Daddy." She worried and fretted about you one minute and the next she was bragging about what a cute marriage you have. She loved her sisters and fretted about her nephews. She never turned anyone away from her office and the Drivers knew that when they had a problem they could turn to her.  That is how she earned the name Ms. Helen. Your legacy is the number of drivers and their families that you helped. For you Helen couldn't we have had just one more story or joke together? What I would not give to see you smile and to giggle with you one more time. Ms. Fiesty you were a role model for me and taught me how to shake it off put a boss in their place. Helen and I went from Howdy Do to quick friends in a blink of an eye.  I went to her 60th birthday party, not planning to stay too late...it was such a long drive home. Not a chance, Helen was absolutely aglow with love for all her friends...no way I was going to miss a minute of this. Thank you Dana & Randy for giving her that night. She told me it was the best birthday of her life. I gave her a book of "Poetry for the Spirit" that night. She tells me she reads it everyday. Today...on this saddest of days, somehow knowing that brings me peace.  Farewell kindred spirit!



Helen was the best neighbor for over twenty years that anyone could ask for and she was in all of that a very rare thing--a friend. I will miss her.



I loved Helen, as we all did.  She was the heart and soul of Solid Waste Services. She had the respect and admiration of all of her fellow employees and friends.  We are all in shock and we miss her so much already.  May God bless her mother and her family.
