Helen Jo Porter Evans, 78, of Austin, passed away Nov. 26, 2015. Helen was born in 1937 in Tift County, Georgia. She grew up in Ashburn, Georgia and attended Valdosta State College. Helen met her beloved husband, Rush Evans, at WIBW-TV in Topeka, Kansas, where they were both employed. They married in 1959 and had two children.
Rush's broadcasting career took them to several states, but Austin has remained their primary home since the '70s. Helen was a dedicated homemaker and had many interests, but the interests of her family were her main priority. She was a Sustaining member of The Junior League of Austin.
Helen was the most kind-hearted and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and friend you'd ever meet. Her sweet smile and laugh endeared her to all.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Rush Evans, Jr.; daughter Tina Evans; son Rush Evans III and his wife Ray Anne, and their son, Rush Evans IV, who was Helen's beloved grandson. Other survivors include Ray Anne's son, Chris Calfee and his wife Sarah and their children. She is survived by her sister's children, Lynne Childs and her husband David, and their children and grandchild; Andrea Kennedy and her children; Cyrus Broadhurst III; and Franklin Broadhurst. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Florence Porter Broadhurst. Everyone who knew Helen loved her, as she did them.
A memorial service will be held Dec. 5, 10 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home Chapel, 3125 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX, with a brief reception following.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to a favorite charity.
