

Helen Katherine Wiginton Gracy We have lost our treasure, Helen Katherine Wiginton Gracy, went to live with her sweet Jesus on August 17, 2003. Helen was born January 17, 1909 in Hillsboro, Texas to Marcus and Gorham Wiginton. She moved to Austin in 1919 when her father was elected to the state legislature, and in 1926 graduated from Austin High School. She majored in home economics at the University of Texas. She won many awards for her sewing skills in state competition. Mrs. Gracy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of St. Davids Episcopal Church until the last several years when she was unable to drive downtown any longer. She moved her membership to St. Johns Episcopal in her neighborhood at that time. On October 23, 1929, she married Richard Swearingen Gracy They moved to the farm in north Austin, now known as Gracy Woods where they farmed and ranched until 1941 when they began to dairy, They built their existing home in 1935 shortly after the couples first house burned. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years in 1972. Mrs. Gracy was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. She also was predeceased by two grandchildren, Lance Gracy in 1978 , and Kathy Gracy in 1980 She is survived by her son Richard (Dick) Gracy, Jr. And wife Mary of Austin, daughter in law Lucy Gracy of San Antonio, daughter Helen Mary Gracy Smith and husband J. L. of Salado. She is also survived by her grandchildren Rick Gracy, of Austin, Debbie Gracy of San Antonio, Matt Gracy and wife Annette of Midland, Jerry Smith and wife Sharon of Salado, Suzette Boggs and husband Tommy of Austin, and Dwain Smith and wife Kathleen of Salado, eleven great grandchildren and one great-great grandson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Joy (her favorite word) was used often as she described her wonderful feathered friends, the guineas. In her later years, she loved to sit by the window and watch her birds the bug exterminators at work. Her guineas are an intricate part of her neighborhood and will continue to be cared for and watched by her neighbors. The family expresses thanks to all her friends, neighbors, caregivers and most recently the incredible, wonderful staff at Buckner Villas where she resided for the past three months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Johns Episcopal Church, 11201 Parkfield Drive, Austin Texas 78758. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 23rd at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Al Rodriquez and Reverend Charles Sumners, Jr. Burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rick Gracy, Matt Gracy, Jerry Smith, Dwain Smith, Tommy Boggs, Michael Walls and Mark Heierman. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Sneed and Murray Robinson.
