

Helen Susanna Longmire, 88, of Austin passed away March 10, 2010. She was born on October 27, 1921 in Lynch, Kentucky, to parents Louis Horvath and Susanna Kiss Horvath. She was the third of seven children. After graduating valedictorian from Lynch High School in 1940, Helen attended St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Covington, Kentucky. and graduated in 1943. Helen enlisted in the Navy Nurse Corps and was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. It was there that she met and married Griffin Preston Longmire, who was also in the Navy. They settled in Austin and had one daughter. Helen was a long time member of Saint Mary Cathedral where she was active in several organizations. She enjoyed baking, gardening, and needlework. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers. Helen is survived by her daughter Susan and husband Sylvan Blaschke, her grandaughters Stephanie and husband Greg Bried, and Sheri and husband Erik Maund, also by her great-granchildren Preston and Hannah Maund , and Walker and Weston Bried. She is also survived by two sisters and her special friend, Franklin Stephens, of Gloucester, Massachusetts.
A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 7:00p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home at 6100 North Lamar. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00a.m. Wednesday March 24, at Austin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Cathedral, 203 E.10th Street, Austin, Texas 78701.
