

Helen was born on January 4, 1924 to Adelaide Baldwin Bauer and Harry W. Bauer at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. She attended the Paris Schools and Paris Junior College. She received her BA degree from Texas Woman's University and worked in Dallas before coming to Austin. She met her husband in University Presbyterian Church. Helen and Egbert Smith brought up their three girls in the activities of University Presbyterian Church and the Austin Public Schools.
Helen was active in the Highland Park Garden Club, Church Women United, Presbyterian Women of the Church (UPC), Presbyterian Fellowship at Westminster Manor, Auxiliary of the Texas Surveyors Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution. After the girls were out of the public schools she was employed by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Austin. Later she was in the Registrars Office at the University of Texas. After retirement she became President of the Austin Woman's Club, a member of the Pathfinders Club and remained active in the University Presbyterian Church.
Helen and Egbert Smith's children are MayBell Smith Andrews and her husband G. Scott Andrews and Granddaughter Ninamarie Joy Andrews; Adelaide Smith Christensen and her husband Carl H. Christensen and Grandson John Christensen and Winnie Smith Trippet and Robert H. Trippet. Her Mother, Adelaide Baldwin Bauer, brothers Charles Baldwin Bauer and Benjamin Bauer and her husband Egbert V. Smith all preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at University Presbyterian Church, 2203 San Antonio Street, Austin, Texas 78705 on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
