

Herbert Joseph Barnard Sr., 85, a longtime Austin homebuilder, went to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, on July 25, 2005. Herb is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Lillian Morse; his son, Herbert Joseph Barnard Jr. and wife, Alice Kaye Bunny Barnard of Austin; and his daughter, Barbara Ann Banta and her husband, Robert Hugh Banta of Austin. His grandsons are: Christopher Barnard and wife Vanesa, Bryan Barnard, and Scott Barnard and fiancée Megan Brundridge. His granddaughters are: Lauren Banta and Renée Banta. Herbs great-grandson is Aiden Patrick Barnard. He also has many beloved nieces and nephews. Herb was born May 27, 1920 in Galveston to Herbert John Barnard and Louise Leutsch. He and his niece Shirley Edwards were later reared by his sister and brother-in-law, Madelyn and Joseph T. Ray. Herb was preceded in death by his brother, Milton. Herb graduated from Ball High School in 1938 as a lieutenant in the ROTC. As a young man, he was president of the DeMolays. While working at Black Hardware Co. in Galveston, he married Dorothy at Trinity Episcopal Church, where he had been baptized and confirmed. He trained as a bombardier while a cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and also attended the University of Alabama. He is a member of American Legionnaires. During the late 1940s the family moved to LaMarque, where Herb worked at LaMarque Lumber Co., and later worked for Central and Bay-Tex Lumber Companies. He was active in many community organizations including the Boy Scouts and presidency of the Jaycees. He served as a vestryman and Sunday School superintendent at LaMarques St. Michaels Episcopal Church. As a lay minister, he conducted services at St. Pauls Episcopal Mission in Texas City. In 1960, the family moved to Austin where Herb started his homebuilding business and was active in the Austin Homebuilders Association. He eventually went into partnership with his son, Herb Jr.s architecture and building firm. After retirement, he worked for Furrows Building Supply Co. As an active member of St. Davids Episcopal Church since 1963, Herb was the childrens chaplain for many years. He was also a charter member and president of the brotherhood of St. Andrew. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 28th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, July 29, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Davids Episcopal Church, 304 E. 7th St, Austin, 78701 (parking will be available in the Church parking garage).
