This remarkable man, husband, father and friend was born on July 8, 1944 to Homer D. and Dorothy Owens in Austin, Texas. Until recent years, he always bragged about having never lived outside a 10 mile radius of where he was born. But that never stopped him from enjoying to the fullest, the exciting and wonderful world that God gifted him.
Homer graduated from McCallum High School in 1962 and then attended the University Of Texas School Of Business with a BBA Degree in 1967. His father died unexpectedly and Homer found himself thrust into the day to day responsibilities of running his father's insurance agency, Homer Owens Insurance. He secured his insurance license and thus began his future in the insurance industry as an independent agent. At later dates, this produced other insurance related businesses . . . Environmental Insurance and Southwest Staff Services.
As many of Homer's family and friends can tell you, he always considered his greatest achievement in life was finding true love with Mickey. They were married June 7, 1986 and were together always until his death. Homer loved flowers and was always bringing them home to Mickey. When they very first met, he stepped through a door with a handful of flowers, and was unexpectedly greeted by Mickey. From that moment on, their love never wavered. He offered Mickey a choice on the first date . . . she could go out with him to an expensive dinner, or, go to the tractor pulls. She chose the tractor pulls and that relationship was sealed. Their lives merged and a new family was created. Homer had a son, Wade. Mickey had two children, a son, Tommy and daughter, Kella. A few dogs were added over time. Rap, Sport, Susie, Luke and Buddy. Then came horses. Zip, Button, Uno, Vato, Listo and Cooper. This family went through the ordinary ups and downs of life, but never wavered in their commitment to each other.
Homer's entire life was an adventure and full of many friends who remained such all his life. He had a way about him of finding and keeping friends that never changed. Homer touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity. His trademark sense of humor remained all the way to the end. When his nurse, Maureen asked him if anything particular was bothering him, he opened his eyes and said. . "Yes, YOU, for waking me up!!” Homer was talented in many different ways. In the early years, he could fix just about anything and was ALWAYS working on something. His hobbies were many. Homer enjoyed ranching, hunting, fishing, water skiing, snow- skiing, scuba diving and horseback riding with Mickey. He also LOVED to tell stories . . . sometimes dressing up the details a
bit!! Nothing he did was ever half-way . . . If a little bit of something was good, then a whole lot more was better!!
Homer and Mickey became members of the Lost Pines Cowboy Church in December, 2015. At Homer's urging, they stepped through the doors of a saloon and found Jesus waiting inside for them. Lost Pines Cowboy Church rented this space from
3-H Cattle Company Restaurant. Pastor Greg Long and the church members became an extension of their family. Mickey always credited Homer with this blessed addition to their lives and he cherished his relationship with Jesus Christ all the way to the end.
Homer faced the challenges of his COPD for 15 years and fought the battle all the way to the end. Never giving up the fight and holding tightly to his faith.
Homer Wade Owens is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Mickey. His son, Wade and wife Jennifer and 3 lovely granddaughters, Shelby, Laney and Hunter. . . Stepson, Tommy Wojhan and grandson, Stephen, fiancé Shannon . . . and Stepdaughter, Kella Wojhan and many other family and friends who were blessed to know him.
I found a little notecard that Homer had tucked away in his special place. He had written down the following sayings:
I look back on my life, and, I'm extremely impressed
that I'm still alive !!!
Birthdays are Good!! The more you have . . . .
the longer you live !!
A champion is not a man who never loses, a champion
is a man who never quits. . . Craig Cameron, friend
Wag more . . . Bark less!!! . . . Larry Gatlin, singer
May God bless you all.
