

Dr. Howard LeBus passed away on Friday, February 24, 2006. He was born on September 5, 1922 in Henrietta, Texas and moved to Gladewater in 1932. A life-long Texan, he was Gladewaters first pediatrician, a member of the Gladewater School Board, and proud recipient of the GHS outstanding alumni award. He became head of the Pediatrics Department at Scott & White in Temple in 1962, and returned to private practice in Gladewater in 1969. Howard was a historian, lover of music and books, avid sports fan, and gentle man. He was loved by and loved his patients, friends, and family. He also loved all things Texan, and East Texan. In the 1980s he recorded video interviews preserving an oral history of early Gladewater and the East Texas Oil Field, which are part of the collection of the Gregg County Museum. He was a frequent contributor to the Gladewater Mirror, sharing his remarkable memory through stories of Gladewater and school life. He graduated from Kilgore College before attending the University of Texas at Austin. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he also completed his Pediatric residency. Following medical school he served as an officer in the United States Navy attached to the Marine Corps. Howard was stationed in China, where he met and married Bessie Attree, an English girl who grew up in China. He and Bess came home to Gladewater in 1947. He is survived by his wife Bess, daughters Ann LeBus of Mendocino California and Becky Jolin of Austin, and grandsons Ian and Greg Schrager of Mendocino. He was preceded in death by his brother Jake, sisters Mary Jo Ingram and Lou LeBus, and grandson Luke Jolin. A memorial service for Dr. LeBus will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Gladewater, Texas on Friday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m., with Rev. Guy Pry officiating.
