

HUGH M. KIEFER, 85, died Thursday, June 3, 2010. Hugh, a longtime resident of Austin, most recently resided at the Querencia Retirement Community in the Barton Creek Area of Austin. Hugh was born in New Orleans, LA, to Col. Frank I. Kiefer and Caroline E. Kiefer, both of whom preceded him in death. Hugh was also preceded in death by a brother, Gerard Kiefer and a sister, Laurie Byrd (nee Kiefer) and a grandchild, Jordan Kiefer. Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Frances L. Kiefer (nee Speer) and two brothers, Charles Kiefer and Frank Kiefer. He is also survived by his five children, Gerrard, Dennis, Frank Douglas, Craig and Carol Stewart (nee Kiefer); sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Hugh grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Frances Speer. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and an officer's commission in the United States Navy. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. Hugh worked 40 years as a Mechanical Engineer for Shell Oil Company, holding many positions of responsibility throughout his career. Hugh was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in the Balcones area of Austin and served as a Stephen's Minister for the church. He made friends easily and was loved by many. He will be missed.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, June 14, 2010 at the Hope Presbyterian Church, 11512 Olson Drive, Austin, TX 78750. Military Honors to follow.
