James Walter Chatfield died peacefully on December 5, 2010 after a lengthy illness. He was born to Jane Marie and Walter Chatfield on October 21, 1917 in Charleston, WV. He married the late Alice May Rust in 1938. They were married for 67 years and had three children, Jane, J.R., and Nancy. After graduating from high school during the Great Depression, he began what would be a 53 year career with Union Carbide. Along the way, he earned his college degree from the University of Charleston in 1966. Besides his family, his life-long passion was golf. He was an active member of the old Kanawha Country Club in South Charleston as well as the secretary of the Kanawha Valley Golf Association for over 40 years. His dedication to the sport, particularly in the area of junior golf, had a positive impact on many aspiring golfers, young and old alike. He was also a lifetime member of the local Elks lodge.
In 1996, he and Alice moved to Georgetown, TX to be closer to one of his children and grandchildren. He spent his last few years enjoying his family while always trying to shoot his age. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Alice and his daughter, Jane. He is survived by his son, J.R. and wife Sandy, his daughter, Nancy and husband Lou, his grandchildren, Stacy, Jay, and Jeramie, and great grandchildren, Kiaren, Miranda, Amy, Preston, and Carter. The family would like to thank the staff of Lighthouse Hospice for the loving care and comfort they provided. He loved life and he will be missed.
