Born on Staten Island, NY, in 1933, Jim was the firstborn of James Patrick Costello and Geraldine Stuart. After graduating from St. Peter's High School, he served in the United States Navy before building a career with the United States Postal Service, where he eventually retired after nearly three decades of service.
Jim met his beloved wife Bernadette Shelley in Staten Island at one of his favorite places, Cedar Grove Beach Club, where he spent his summers. They shared an extraordinary journey for 55 years, during which they built a loving family and literally 'cruised' the world. Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, exploring Venice, and visiting Jim's homeland of Ireland were among their favorite adventures.
Jim was blessed with a gift of gab, an endless sense of curiosity, and a big, warm smile that endeared him to everyone he met.
He was a humble, gentle man of impeccable tastes. He loved art house movies, Broadway theater, and believed in taking time to enjoy a good cocktail and conversation before dinner.
The song 'What I Did for Love' from Jim's favorite Broadway musical, A Chorus Line, encapsulates Jim's life, characterized by his vibrant personality, devout Catholic faith, and unwavering support for those he loved.
He adored his grandson, Stuart, with whom he spent countless hours in the early days exploring the neighborhood on walks, and later sharing stories of his life. He was also fond of his grand dogs, Max, Relay and Rerun, and had a special, calming way with both people and pets. Jim was a beacon of warmth and friendship, leaving a lasting impact on all who were lucky enough to know him.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Bernadette; his daughter, Shelley Costello Phillips, her husband Chris, and their son, Stuart; his son, James Patrick Costello, and wife Karen Mae; his sister, Dolores Spencer, and husband Chuck; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 5th, at 10am at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 186 Main Street, Winsted, CT, followed by a burial at South Cemetery, 406 Smith Hill Road, Colebrook, CT 06021. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests considering a donation to the Alzheimer Drug Discovery Foundation https://www.alzdiscovery.org/donate or a charity of your choice in Jim's honor.
