James Curtis Gattis

James Curtis Gattis, son of the late Walter and Bess Gattis was born on February 17, 1937, in Fort Worth, Texas. He attended the Austin public school system and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1955.

Jim was united in holy matrimony with Barbara Ann Rouse in August of 1956. Jim graduated from the University of Texas in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

Following graduation, Jim joined his father in the insurance business and later began what would be a 34 year career in education. His love and commitment was to educate children in the Austin Public School System and at Grace Covenant School. During that time he touched countless lives. Jim retired after 27 years with AISD and 7 years at Grace Covenant School.

Jim professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age, and “grew up” at First Methodist Church in Austin. Later in life he was an Elder and a Deacon at Grace Covenant Church and he remained an active member of several men’s Bible study groups until his final days. Barbara and Jim also served as marriage counselors for several years.

Jim was known to friends and family as “Bubba.” He was gifted by God with a servant’s heart. No task was too large... no task was too small. If someone had a need, Jim was always there to help. He was a proud Eagle Scout and scout leader. Bubba’s passion for the great outdoors included hunting, fishing, traveling and sunsets on the beach. Jim’s life and his marriage was and will be an exemplary model of God’s grace and an inspiration to friends and family.

Jim and Barbara’s marriage of over 68 years was blessed with four children: Gayla, Dawn, Jimbo and Aimee. They have also been blessed with 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Jim graduated from this life on Sunday, January 5th, at Seton Hospital in Austin. Jim is in his eternal home, prepared for Him by Jesus. He will delight in the presence of God and Jesus our Lord and Savior for eternity and they will delight in his long winded stories.

Memorial service will be held Monday January 13th, 10am at Grace Covenant Church, 9431 Jollyville Rd, Austin, 78759.
