Born on July 5, 1952, in Waco, Texas, Mike later moved with his family to Houston, where he graduated from Bellaire High School. He went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin, earning his BBA. It was there that he met Debbie, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love and devotion. After graduating, Mike and Debbie married and made their home in Houston.
Together, they raised their family in both Houston and Plano. Mike was a constant, unwavering presence in the lives of his children, Michael and Lindsay. Whether coaching sports, cheering from the sidelines, or supporting every milestone and interest, he was a devoted father whose enthusiasm, kindness, and steady support shaped their lives in lasting ways.
Professionally, Mike built a respected finance and tax career across the oil & gas and banking industries in both Houston and Dallas. In 2005, he and Debbie returned to Austin, where Mike joined Dell Technologies. Being back in Austin allowed him to reconnect with the University of Texas community he cherished, attending as many Longhorn events as possible.
The greatest joy of Mike’s later years came with the arrival of his grandchildren, Atley and Ava, who quickly became the center of his world. His love for them was boundless, and he treasured every moment spent as their proud “GPop.”
Mike is survived by his wife, Debbie Spurlin; his children, Michael Spurlin and Lindsay Spurlin Higginbotham and her husband, Andrew Higginbotham; his beloved grandchildren, Atley and Ava Higginbotham; and his sisters, Pamela Veronie and Patricia Hatcher.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Anne B. Holloway; his father, Robert J.Spurlin; and his sister, Mary Holloway.
Mike will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his steadfast dedication to family, and his lifelong loyalty to those he loved. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
