

He is survived by his wife of 10 years Roseann Mandziuk; brothers Lynn (Dawn) Studer, Blufton, SC; and Gary (Martha) Studer, Tiffin, OH; children Kristine Hagemeier (Keith), Powell, OH; Craig Studer (Alyssa Cummings), Austin, TX; Kyle Studer, Pahala, HI; grandchildren Jill and Kate Hagemeier and Thea Studer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim received his B.S degree in biology from The Defiance College, an M.A. degree from Bowling Green State University in counseling and guidance, and a Ph.D. degree from The Ohio State University in higher education administration. Prior to retirement in 2010, Jim was active in higher education for 45 years as a senior level administrator and tenured faculty member. He served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs for The University of Texas System; Vice President for Student Affairs at Texas State University; Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Administration at Texas State; Special Assistant to the President of Texas State; Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Services and Director of Student Life at Michigan State University; Dean of Student Life at Ohio Wesleyan University; and Assistant and Associate Dean of Students at The Defiance College.
During his career he received many honors including the Alumni Citation for Academic Excellence from The Defiance College. He was named a Diamond Honoree of the American College Personnel Association Foundation in 2009 for his outstanding and sustained contributions to higher education and student affairs, and was awarded the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrator’s Faculty member of the year in 2006 and James Caswell Distinguished Service Award in 2010.
He will be remembered for his caring, dedication, intelligence, quick wit, and impeccable sense of style. Jim loved participating in and watching sports and was particularly passionate about college athletics. He was an inveterate reader of newspapers and a devotee of public radio. He also enjoyed supporting the arts community in Austin, including the Paramount Theatre, Zach, and The Long Center, and delighted in traveling the world in his retirement.
A memorial service for Jim will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 5:00 pm in the Sac-N-Pac Room in the End Zone Complex at Bobcat Stadium on the Texas State University campus, 1100 Aquarena Springs Drive, San Marcos, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions will be accepted for the Dr. James (Jim) D. Studer Memorial Fund. The fund will be established to provide a Fellowship for the Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) Program.
