Jane Bauld of Austin, Texas died peacefully on August 17, 2023 with her loving husband and family by her side. She was born on April 29, 1937 in Robert Lee, Texas to Iva Jane (Brown) Scoggins and Drue Alexander Scoggins. She committed to following Jesus Christ at an early age, and she was an active member of Austin Baptist Church.
Jane grew up in Burnet, Texas helping her parents operate Scoggins Furniture Store as she attended school. She graduated from Burnet High School in 1955. Always a bold and passionate leader, she answered her calling to teach young children by opening the first kindergarten in Burnet known as The Little Red School House. As owner, director, and teacher it immediately became the center of early education in Burnet. She went on to serve as head teacher in the opening of four amazing preschools in Austin and being awarded Teacher of the Year by the Austin Association for the Education of Young Children.
Jane became an accomplished author, taking the stories she would teach to create empowering books for children. She authored Rights for Children in 1995 and was recognized by the United Nations and the Texas Book Festival. She also authored local stories engaging children in the community with Hector’s Escapades: The First Night Out and The Mother Tree which is the story of the center piece and creation of Taniguchi Japanese Garden in Zilker Botanical Garden. In all, she authored over 30 books and taught workshops at the University of Texas for new children's book authors. Many stories were inspired by her travels through the country and the world, always with her husband and often with her children.
Throughout her life, Jane joyously supported her family and church and was always sharing scriptures as well as witnessing to others. In her recent hospital visit she would joke with all the staff while reminding them to accept Christ and pray. It is fitting that in her living room sits a small plaque front and center that reads, “PRAY FIRST – Don’t worry about anything; Instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. – Philippians 4:6.”
Jane is survived by her husband, Dr. Nathan L. Bauld and by her children: Stuart and wife Mandy of Austin, Sean and wife Renee of San Marcos, Mark and wife Thiên of Seguin and John and wife Rose of Seadrift. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia.
A memorial service celebrating Jane’s life will be held at Austin Baptist Church (7016 Ribelin Ranch Dr, Austin, TX 78750) on Tuesday August 22 at 1:30 PM. Flowers may be sent to Austin Baptist Church on the morning of the memorial service.
